When you are living with pain, numbness, paralysis, or other symptoms associated with Multiple Sclerosis, even the simplest daily routines could become a challenge. Planning ahead and finding ways to make living easier for yourself will allow you to be as independent as possible. Here are a few ways in which you can be resourceful while managing your symptoms.
Items with thin handles, such as combs, toothbrushes, and hair brushes might be hard to get a grip on, and could strain the muscles in the hands and forearms. Those who have a weak grip or have the use of only one hand might have trouble holding these items and can sometimes drop them. A thick, cushioned grip can be added to these items in a number of ways. Some modeling clay, the kind that air dries and is water resistant once dry, will often help. Rubber grips can also be obtained from any hardware store.

Tubes of toothpaste might be tedious to use, especially if one is only able to use one hand. A wall mounted, automatic toothpaste dispenser can cleanly distribute just the right amount, every time. Similar products can dispense soap and hand sanitizer, and are often available in medical supply stores or discount shops.
Using a toilet can be a problem for those with limited mobility, especially those who use wheelchairs. An elevated toilet seat is easy to get in and out of, and can be coupled with a bar mounted to a wall. Some of these bars are suitable for travel use and can be mounted without nails or damage to the wall.
Showering or bathing can also be a challenge. A shower chair can be used for those who cannot stand for extended periods of time. However, it is important to only use a chair that is specially designed for this purpose to avoid slipping or injury. It is a great idea to install a detachable shower head, so you can clean every part of the body, even with limited movement.
A fuzzy bathrobe is a cozy way to get dry, and it does not require the energy needed to pat down with a towel. A little talcum powder will help you feel clean and dry while smelling fresh, and also combats sweating and irritation. If you have trouble holding a heavy hair dryer, try a lightweight travel version, or purchase a counter-top blow dryer stand so you can be hands free.
