Cleaning And Care Of Corian Countertops

Corian counters are considered top of the line when it comes to beauty and durability. These solid pour creations offer the look of granite without the need for seams. Since they are synthetic by design, however, some special care comes into play when Corian counter tops are added to a kitchen, bathroom or even workspace.

Bathroom Towel Stand

Corian, by design, is a pretty tough man-made material. These counters resist scratching, staining and even chipping and breaking, but they are not indestructible. Special care might be required to help ensure they continue looking great for years to come.

Bathroom Towel Stand

The basic rules of the road for Corian care follow the same typical pattern that almost all other counters do. They include:

* No cutting allowed. Corian counter tops are pretty durable, but it is still not recommended that cutting be done directly on the surface. Use a cutting board instead to preserve the look.

* Heat hurts. Corian can become damaged when very hot pots or pans are set directly on the surface. Avoid this by having plenty of hot pads or trivets on hand. Remove hot items immediately if they happen on the countertops.

* Avoid dropping heavy items on them. Corian can become damaged when something particularly heavy falls on the surface. Take care to avoid this from happening.

Cleaning Corian counter tops will depend a lot on the type of surface that has actually been chosen. These counters come in three standard finishes. The instructions for matte, semi-gloss and high-gloss tend to vary a bit.

* Matte finish cleaning. In general, matte finished or satin finished Corian counter tops can be cleaned using plain old soapy water. An ammonia-based cleaner may also be used. Water marks can generally be wiped up easily with a damp cloth or sponge. Towel dry to buff them out. Disinfecting these counter tops only requires a mild bleach solution. Treat stains as they occur. A mildly abrasive cleanser or a product recommended specifically for Corian should be used.

* Semi-gloss cleaning. The basic instructions for the matte finish counter tops apply here, as well. To enhance shine, special counter top polish can be used. Treat stains with a very mild abrasive. Daily cleaning can generally be taken care of with a basic sponge or a damp cloth. Buff dry to increase shine.

* High-gloss cleaning. These counters might take a little more tender, loving care. The basic instructions follow the others, but a softer polish might be required to help keep finish high on these counter tops. Don't forget to wipe up with a damp cloth and buff dry.

If particularly nasty stains or spills present, follow manufacturer instructions for tackling them. This is the best advice for ensuring the stains are removed or lessened and that warranties that might be present are not voided. When possible, use products that are endorsed by the manufacturer or guaranteed to work with Corian.

With a little care and basic maintenance, Corian counter tops can stand the test of time and look beautiful doing so. These counters are very durable, but a few things present cause for concern.

How To Clean Your House Like a Professional

For several years I worked with a janitorial service cleaning offices. From that experience I learned many tricks to make your house cleaning chores easier and faster.

Bathroom Towel Stand

First, decide on the level of disgust that makes you uncomfortable. If you don't mind a little dust but can't stand clothes on the floor, concentrate on that problem.

Bathroom Towel Stand

Second, treat house cleaning like a job - schedule a regular time to clean, put it on a calendar as you would a business appointment and keep that appointment. Enlist your family in the project. If everyone works together, all the chores are quickly completed.

Third, assemble your tools. A pro has a cart to push around but that is not needed in a home. Buy or make a caddy that holds your cleaning supplies. Put a duster, liquid cleaner, damp rag or sponge, dry link free towel and window cleaner in it and store it in a convenient closet. If you don't have small children, keep additional supplies where they will be used - bathroom tile cleaner, toilet brush, etc. in the bathroom, cleanser in the kitchen.

Fourth, set a time limit. If you know that you have one hour to finish all your weekly cleaning, you will become efficient and organized.

Fifth, decide what is to be done on a daily, weekly, monthly and semi-annual basis. For example, daily chores could include pick up all clothes and put in proper place, dishes washed, garbage taken out, countertops wiped down and books and magazines put away. Weekly chores could include dust surfaces and window sills, wash tv, computer and windows where the dog puts his nose, vacuum carpets, mop kitchen and bathroom floors and clean toilet. Make a list of your items and choose how often they need to be done.

Okay, now you are actually ready to start. Begin in one room and put everything in its proper place. Then clean the upper surfaces by dusting the tables and window sills. Clean the tv and computer screen. Clean counter tops and sinks and toilets. Last, clean the floor surfaces. Vacuum and mop.

Voila! Your first room is done. Repeat for the other rooms of the house.

Turn on lively music, turn off the television and just do it. Set your timer and see how much you can accomplish in the alloted time.

Professional janitors know that cleaning isn't particularly fun but it needs to be done. If you treat it like a job, scheduling time, what needs to be done and a reward you will find that cleaning your house will be a lot easier.

Get Rid Of Sunburn Pain - 3 Top Tips

Lying in the sun is fun. Getting burned by the sun is not fun. But every year millions of people do get severe sunburn. So, how do you get rid of sunburn pain and agony? The best advice is, of course, to use sunscreen creams BEFORE exposing your skin to the sun. But when it's too late, there's still a few things you can do. Here's my 3 top tips to help you get rid of sunburn misery...

Bathroom Towel Stand

1. The biggest mistake you can make is to apply any kind of soothing cream before you first cool down the affected area. This will simply trap in the heat. The burning will continue, and you will suffer even more. Cool down the skin with ice or a cold wetted towel first, or lie in a very cold bath, or stand in a cold shower for at least five minutes.

Bathroom Towel Stand

2. White vinegar in a solution of two parts cold water to one part vinegar can work wonders. Soak a cloth in the solution and press it gently onto the burned area. You should never rub it in as this will make matters worse. Just dab in on gently, then leave the skin to dry. Aloe vera can be gently applied to the skin as a follow-up. Do this twice a day until you heal.

3. While aloe vera gel works well to relieve sunburn, some lotions contain alcohol. This will dry out the skin and tend to retain the heat, so any alcohol-based lotions or creams are best avoided.

The summer sun can be much stronger than you may think. If you plan to be exposed to strong sunshine, always wear a suncream of appropriate strength. Remember, sunburn can cause cancer. You can always get rid of sunburn pain, but that may just be the short-term effect. Be careful!

Ten Ways to Decorate Your Bathroom on a Budget

You may think that you don't have enough money in your budget to decorate your bathroom. But, it can be done without spending too much money. Just changing your bathroom accessories out to new (or to accessories that you've found at garage sales), can't make a dramatic difference.

Bathroom Towel Stand

First of all, take everything that can be moved out of your bathroom so that you can start with a clean slate. This means everything on the countertops, and in drawers and the medicine cabinet.

Bathroom Towel Stand

Now, make a plan. Decide what you really need to have in the bath and where you are going to put it. Clutter is something that can ruin the look of any bathroom design. Try to find places for toothbrushes, hair care supplies, and the like. Find some organizational systems that will fit in your cupboards and drawers. The more storage space that you have, the less you will be tempted to keep on top of the counters, and ruining the looks of your new room.

Here are some ideas that you can use to beautify as well as cut down on bathroom clutter:

1. Start with a fresh coat of paint. Painting a room is the quickest way to change the décor of a room. You can also paint your cabinets if they are damaged or in poor shape. Make sure that your paint will stand up to the humid conditions that all bathrooms have.

2. If you are really ambitious, you can remove the mirror above the sink and replace it with a new one. Two smaller decorative mirrors over a double vanity instead of one large mirror will bring your bathroom into a more modern style.

3. Add a nice looking hook to your bathroom door to hang up bathrobes and plastic pouches which can contain hair dryers other bathroom items.

4. Change out the knobs and drawer pulls on your cabinets and drawers. Try something with a little more color or in a different style than the original knobs.

5. Replace your bathroom hardware such as bathtub and sink faucets. A new, shiny faucet will work wonders for your bath.

6. Now, change your bath towel racks and rings. Also, think about where you will keep those towels that you aren't using. There are many decorative options like baskets and shelves that you can use. This way, you can have the colors of the towels to accent your bathroom but still keep them neat and tidy.

7. Use bathroom accessories to add color and style. Purchase shower curtains, a waste basket, liquid hand soap dispenser, soap dishes, new towels and a toothbrush holder.

8. Buy new throw rugs for the floor. They come in almost every color imaginable so try to match them to your towels and other accessories.

9. Add one or two moisture-loving plants. They will bring life to the room.

10. Finally, add a few fancy candles to add warmth.

These inexpensive ideas will beautify any bathroom without the need to totally demolish it and add all new cupboards, counters and bathroom fixtures. Give it a try and you'll have a whole new bathroom!

Client Care Tips For Your CNAs - Bathing

Assisting clients at bath time is part of the job of a nursing assistant. Do the CNAs at your workplace know how important this routine task is to their clients? Do they use bath time as an opportunity to observe their clients closely? By sharing the following information and tips at your next CNA inservice meeting, you may give your aides a new outlook on personal care.

Bathroom Towel Stand

The Joys of Bathing

Bathroom Towel Stand

Imagine this: You've had a rough day at work. You're feeling sweaty and tired. You're looking forward to taking a nice hot relaxing shower. Now, imagine how it would feel if instead of being able to simply hop in the shower, your physical condition required you to:

Take your clothes off in front of a stranger. Hold onto grab bars because you were afraid of falling in the shower. Ask for help washing the private areas of your body. Stand and shiver while waiting for someone to bring you a towel.

Suddenly, the idea of a nice hot shower doesn't seem so appealing, does it? Your clients used to be able to take care of their own bathing needs. Now, many of them need your help. And, they probably aren't happy about that! Being dependent on others for bathing probably makes them feel:

Old and useless. Ashamed. Scared about what else they might have to give up doing for themselves.

Bathing clients requires patience, strength, compassion and skill. Keep reading to learn ways to make bathing a safer, more efficient process for you and your clients.

8 Benefits of Bathing

Bathing is important because it:

1. Cleanses the body by removing dirt and dead skin cells.

2. Promotes comfort by cooling and refreshing the skin and relaxing the client.

3. Controls body odor by removing bacteria and germs from the skin.

4. Prevents infection.

5. Provides an opportunity for clients to move their muscles and joints.

6. Stimulates circulation.

7. Helps prevent skin breakdown.

8. Gives you an opportunity to communicate with the client and to observe his or her body for changes.

Making Observations at Bath Time

Bath time gives you a terrific opportunity to observe your clients for physical changes. Keep an eye out for problems and report any changes right away.

Check the hair and scalp for head lice. (Lice can happen to anyone-no matter how young or old, dirty or clean, rich or poor.) Look for white lice eggs (known as "nits"). They look like small bits of dandruff, but do not wash or flake off. Instead, they stick firmly to strands of hair. As you comb or wash your client's hair, observe the scalp for scaling, crusting, irritation, bruises, bleeding, lumps or large areas of missing hair. Look over the whole body, making note of any areas of redness, rashes, bed sores, moles or other changes in the skin. Check the entire body for puffiness or swelling, broken skin, redness, bruises or bleeding. Report any unusual body odors. A strange odor may be a symptom of an illness. Watch out for clients who seem to sweat too much, too little or who tend to sweat a lot at night. There are medical conditions that can cause sweating problems. (In fact, it can be life-threatening if a person doesn't sweat at all.) Look for white or yellow areas on finger and toe nails. Your client may have a nail fungus. Check for itching, cracked skin between the toes or on the soles of the feet. These are signs of infections such as "athlete's foot". Watch for black warts on the soles of the feet.

Bath Time Tips

Let your supervisor know if you feel a bath is ordered too often or too seldom for one of your clients. In addition, be sure to report if your client needs a different kind of bath. For example, a client who is getting stronger may be able to switch from a sponge bath to a shower. Or, a client who is getting weaker may need to stop taking tub baths.

Take your clients' suggestions and feelings into consideration. As much as possible, stick to the same bathing routines that your clients had before they needed your help.

Remember that slowing the pace of the bathing process may allow older people to do more for themselves. If you rush them, you may be robbing them of the opportunity to remain semi-independent.

If possible, ask a physical or occupational therapist to teach you techniques for making bath time safer for a particular client.

Praise your clients when they participate in their own personal care. For example, "Your arm seems stronger today. You were able to scrub your back by yourself." or "Your hair looks lovely. You did a great job brushing it."

Safety Issues

The greatest danger in a bathroom comes when clients get in and out of the tub or shower. The risk of falling is high! As you assist clients in and out of the tub or shower, you are at risk for falling, too. Most of these "double" falls happen:

At the end of the bath when the client is tired and/or relaxed. If a client's physical condition has worsened. While transferring a client out of a tub- because the client's body, the tub and the floor are wet and slippery.

Your clients may be physically dependent on you for help at bath time. For example, a client with arthritis may not be able to turn the water faucets on and off. A client may also be psychologically dependent on you. For example, he or she may be afraid to take a bath alone for fear of falling.

If you work in clients' homes-and have access to a cell phone-consider keeping it in the bathroom during bath time. You'll be able to call for help if you and/or the client falls down.

Keep the bathroom well-lit during bath time. Make sure it is well-ventilated, too, so that the room doesn't become too hot. (You-and your client-may become faint in the heat.)

Remember that older people are more sensitive to heat and cold. Test the temperature of the water before your elderly clients get into the tub or shower. If you use a bath thermometer, it should read between 105 and 110 degrees F. After reading the thermometer, test the water on the inside of your wrist...and consider asking your client to do the same.

Empty the tub before you help your client out of it. Getting out of an empty tub is easier than getting out of a filled one.

Unfortunately, your child will be wearing the same thing that a thousand other babies in your town or city will be wearing. The idea is to have your baby stand out in the crowd with hand embroidered baby clothes from a specialty shop, boutique or small baby craft store.

Individually hand embroidered baby clothing will ensure that your baby is wearing something that no other child is wearing. Clothes are a great way for parents to express their baby's personality.
