Even the best-prepared travelers forget a few things occasionally. However, with a little ingenuity, you can rifle through your suitcase and perform mini-miracles with some commonplace items.

White Non-Gel Toothpaste

Toothpaste can come to the rescue if your kids decide to color the hotel walls with crayons. Apply to the crayon marks and wipe with a hand towel. Reapply if necessary, and be sure to rinse the towel afterward.

Are you a mosquito magnet? Dab a little toothpaste on itchy bites to calm the itch - instantly. It also helps to alleviate the pain from minor burns, cold sores, poison ivy, poison oak, and bee stings.

Spot-clean small stains on clothing and hotel carpets with toothpaste. You may have to rinse and reapply a few times, but it is amazing how well that tiny tube of minty-smelling cream will tackle the tough jobs - including grass, lipstick, and ink stains.

Before you step into the shower, smear a little toothpaste on the bathroom mirror and wipe it off. You will be able to shave or apply makeup without a layer of condensation obscuring the view.

Teenagers and acne-prone adults can dab toothpaste on problem areas instead of pimple cream. Apply before going to bed and wake with a greatly improved complexion.

Hand Sanitizer (Isopropyl Alcohol-Based)

Hand sanitizer, carried nowadays by most travelers, is good for removing stains made by things like permanent markers.

You can also use hand sanitizer to clean keyboards in Internet cafes and airport kiosks, steering wheels in rental cars, elevator buttons, vending machine keypads, hotel room key cards, and hundreds of other areas that might carry germs. Surface sanitization is even more important during disease outbreaks and throughout trips to areas of the world where cleanliness is questionable.

Sugar-Free Mouthwash

Are you out of hand sanitizer? Try sugar-free mouthwash instead!

You can use mouthwash to calm the same itches, rashes, and pains as toothpaste. It also works as a surface sanitizer.

Alleviate athlete's foot and other fungal infections by applying mouthwash to affected areas.

Did you forget your flip-flops or protective footwear? Pre-treat shower stall floors with mouthwash to help prevent undesirable infections left behind by previous travelers.

Is your bottle of astringent empty? Dab mouthwash over your face, rinse with warm water, and your complexion will feel tingly-fresh!

Shampoo

If you forget your shaving cream at home, try a substitute made from equal parts shampoo and conditioner. The mixture works on both faces and legs.

You can use shampoo as a stand-in for makeup remover, shower gel, or bubble bath. Remember to rinse thoroughly afterward.

Shampoo is also great for spot-cleaning most small stains and for laundering lingerie and hosiery.

You can remove a bloodstain with shampoo. For best results, try to treat the stain before it has a chance to dry. Rinse the stained area as well as you can with cold water. Apply shampoo, rub it in, and cover with a damp cloth or wet paper towel for a few minutes. Rinse well. The stain should be gone. If not, reapply shampoo.

Pre-treat ring-around-the collar with shampoo before you send shirts to the hotel laundry for cleaning.

A sticky zipper will run smoothly if you unzip, apply a dab of shampoo to the teeth, and work the zipper up and down a few times.

Be Innovative

When confronted with little difficulties while you travel, scrutinize the contents of your suitcase with an innovative attitude. The simplest items can often save the day.
