How Do You Get Rid of Ferret Fleas?

Ferret fleas can be a royal pain in the bum for you and your ferret! They bite and hang around like a bad smell and fuzzy gets annoyed.

I have found the most successful way of getting rid of ferret fleas is through the following steps:

Take all the bedding out of the cage and wash it! Clean the cage thoroughly so that there are no left over flea eggs. Take the infested flea carriers (the ferrets) and throw them in a warm bath (don't literally throw them please). While the fuzzbutt is fleeing up your arm...attempt to wash it using a ferret friendly shampoo (special ferret shampoo) Once you have obtained substantial scratch marks washing your fuzzy from head to toe, let him/her float/ soak in the water for a couple of minutes (always let the fuzzy be able to stand in the water...don't drown it!). This should drown any fleas that were not quick enough to make it to the fuzzy's head. Watch your ferret look at you with contempt while you 'lick' your scratch wounds. Amuse yourself at how your fuzzy resembles a soaked rat... Ok...after a few minutes take fuzzy out of the water and attempt to dry with towel...note that at this time you may become just as wet as fuzzy, will obtain more scratch marks while fuzzbutt tries to make a run for the dustiest and dirtiest part of the bathroom (normally behind the sink and under the toilet). Once you retrieve your fuzzy attempt to trap it in the towel (hold all four corners together) so that it can wriggle around and self dry itself. After a few attempts at this and once your fuzzy is substantially dry let it run around in your designated play area and cringe while you watch it roll around in dust and dirt and smirk at you while doing so. Now that your fuzzy is completely dry get the tube of puppy and kitten Revolution or Advantage (or any other ferret flea killing kitten product available in your country) and put it on the back of your fuzzbutts back (part the fur just above the shoulder blades). Congratulations! You have now treated your fuzzy for fleas! Sometimes if your fuzzbutt is heavily infested you may need to redo this procedure...but you may want to wait a few days...enough time for your scratch marks to heal. Please note: Ferrets are naturally very 'scratchy' animals anyway so they will always be scratching here and there.

To check if they have fleas part their fur and check if it is inflamed with bite marks and see if there are any:

Adult fleas crawling around on their fur Tiny black dots on their fur - flea eggs.

Before using any of the methods outlined below, first test the process on a hidden or inconspicuous area to make sure they don't damage or discolor the fabric you're cleaning. Also, don't put the stained clothing through the dryer until the stain has been removed!

For leathers and suedes:
This is something you can attempt yourself, but you stand a good chance of ruining/marking the material - if it's expensive, consider bringing it to a professional cleaner. Leather is porous and there's not many chemicals you can use on it so the DIY methods involve removing the top layer of the leather along with the stain. Be very careful.

1. Using a blunt edge (like that of a non-serrated butter knife or spoon), gently scrape up any excess from the surface.

2. Gently rub the stain with a gum eraser (a light, abrasive block).

3. If that fails, step it up and use an emery board.

4. If that fails, step it up to fine-grade sandpaper.

For vinyl:
Unfortunately, nail polish usually ruins these materials. You can remove the bulk of the stain, but it will likely leave discoloration.

1. Using a blunt edge (like that of a non-serrated butter knife or spoon), gently scrape up any excess from the surface .

2. Using a clean, paper towel dipped in acetate, dab the area until the stain starts lifting.

3. When the stain stops fading, rinse it well with water.

For most other materials:

Method 1: Hair Spray

1. Using a blunt edge (like that of a non-serrated butter knife or spoon), gently scrape up any excess from the surface .

2. Saturate the dried nail polish with hair spray and let it sit for a few minutes.

3. Gently scrub the stain with a soft-bristled toothbrush until the bulk of the stain has been loosened/removed. Then blot as much up as you can.

4. Apply a spot-cleaner/stain stick to the remaining stain, following the directions on the bottle, and then launder normally.

Method 2: OxyClean

1. Using a blunt edge (like that of a non-serrated butter knife or spoon), gently scrape up any excess from the surface .

2. Make an OxyClean paste by adding just a tiny bit of water to a about a teaspoon or two of OxyClean powder.

3. Cover the stain with the paste, saturating it and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes.

4. Gently scrub the stain with a soft-bristled toothbrush until the stain has diminished.

5. Re-saturate the stain with more paste and allow it dry.

6. Launder the item normally.

Method 3: Acetone

1. Using a blunt edge (like that of a non-serrated butter knife or spoon), gently scrape up any excess from the surface .

2. Saturate the stain with an acetone solution (either acetone based nail polish remover or acetone from your local hardware store) and allow it to soak for a few minutes.

3. Gently dab the stained area with a clean, dry, white towel (paper towels are fine).

4. Continue dabbing until the stain no longer lifts, then hold the fabric underneath a faucet and flush cold water through the back side of the stain.

5. Repeate steps 2-4 until the stain is gone.

How Aromatherapy Works?

Aromatherapy is an amazing alternative medicine for balancing the physical, mental, and emotional energy as well as treating minor ailments. Whether it's a common cold, flu, virus infection, wound, burn, muscle spasm, skin rash, mental fatigue; or depression; our ancestors paved the way for us to reach a deeper understanding in how aromatherapy works. Though we are still far from becoming an expert in this realm of medicine; we have understood that it is a powerful, complex, and vital form of natural therapy available to us today.

Modern medicine seems to address most health concerns from the surface, then providing a quick remedy while ignoring the possible long term side effects prescribed with the pharmaceutical drugs. As a result it disrupted the balance order of the entire health system. In contrast, aromatherapy looks at treating the body holistically by addressing both internal and external causes through application of therapeutic essential oils. When these issues are being addressed, it is slowly re-introducing balance back to the body as well as strengthening the immune system to prevent illnesses and diseases.

If we look at the theory of evolution, we can understand that all of life was created from single cell organisms which evolved into multi-cell organisms; algae, plant, tree, insect, animal and finally human. This theory suggests that we have more in common with plants, animals, and other living things than we may care to relate. For thousands of years, our ancestors have discovered that burning certain woods and aromatic plants can offer pleasant or unpleasant smells. At the same time it makes one feel drowsy or invigorated; just as eating certain raw or cooked plants can be poisonous or medicinal. Over this period of time, our body becomes accustomed to certain plant materials which enabled the body to recognize the chemical substances of the plant. In the process, the body learned to convert these molecules into energy while strengthening the immune system to fight off various diseases.

Essential oils are the byproducts of the plant's secondary metabolism. Each essence has it own unique set of characteristics determined by the species of the plant, its environment, and the season that it grows in. These characteristics also come with the different chemical properties and aromatic fragrances delivered with it. The constituents of the essential oil serve a vital role for insects and animals to attract for reproduction purposes. More importantly the plants produce essential oils to safeguard themselves from viruses, bacteria, molds, fungi, and pests. Each volatile oil in a single plant can provide over 100 properties or chemical constituents. For example, lavender essential oil contains the following constituents: esters, aldehydes, terpenes, phenols, ketone, oxide, alcohols, coumarins, & more. More than 40% of Linalyl acetate from ester compound is found in lavender. This compound is responsible for its calming, relaxing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties. Another 30-35% of Linalool from terpene alcohol in lavender helps to stimulate the immune system and relieve discomfort.

From an aromatherapy perspective, essential oils are volatile oils made up of light molecules. These molecules are lipid soluble that can easily penetrate the pore of the skin to enter the bloodstream, cell membranes, and tissues of the body. To some degree the structure of essential oils and our biological structures share common properties. Both essential oils and human blood contain hormone-like properties which help to harmonize the physiological aspects of the human body. Another similarity involved their ability to fight off infection and cell regeneration. Typically the healing properties of the essential oils can take immediate effect within minutes and release it from the body within hours depending on the essential oil used. Of course ongoing researches are being conducted for more insights on specific pathways and effectiveness of each essential oil. Inhalation and vaporization are common and are the most effective methods used in aromatherapy because scent can signal the brain to respond once the molecules of the essential oils entered the olfactory system. The goal of aromatherapy is to provide natural therapy through aroma by strengthening the immune system to assist in the self-healing process that will bring the body back into balance and harmony.

Primary Aromatherapy Methods:
• Inhalation - add two or three drops of essential oil to a bowl of steaming hot water and breathe in the steam for a few minutes with a towel draped over your head to capture the steam with the essences.
• Vaporization - add pure and therapeutic essential oils to a diffuser or vaporizer instrument.
• Bath & Soak - mixes four to six drops of pure essential oils to 1 ounce of Epsom salt, milk, or carrier oil such as olive or jojoba before adding it to the hot bath. It's a wonderful way to relax with an aromatherapy benefits to soothe the skin.
• Massage - using 12 to 15 drops of pure essential oil in 1 ounce of massage oil base is also an effective and therapeutic ways to receive the aromatherapy benefits of the oils, along with the detoxification of the body through lymph drainage and the stimulation of the entire circulatory system.
• Spray - uses approximately ½- ¾ teaspoon of essential oils (50-75 drops) to 7 ounces of distilled water; mixes it before spray it onto bedding, linen, towel. It can also be use as a room spray to deodorize and disinfect the air. Shake it well before each use.

Physically Challenged - 5 Easy Tasks That Turn Into Challenges

I am an expert on all of these tasks and more, however, we are only going to tackle five
today. I had polio at age 4 and now I am 66 and lead an active and productive life and always have. One of my favorite sayings is that I can do anything you can do, I just have to do it different. After that said, when it comes to things like moving the furniture, I get it done, but I sure do not want anyone taking a picture of it.

Now we are going to cover the five topics. I will cover these as much as I can for every challenge I can think of, if you have any further suggestions/ ideas/methods, by all means share them, we can use all the help we can get!

PARKING: I have a handicap license plate and also a placard for when I ride in the vehicle of someone else. If by chance you need one or the other of these, they are issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles and they expire just like your car license plates, you will need to get a doctors prescription and it will either be a permanent or a temporary permit. You would think that would take care of the parking issue, and I am here to tell you it is just the tip of the iceberg, and anyone that needs these parking places desperately can tell you that each of us have at least 10 really good stories; my favorite is when I was pulling into the handicap spot and a woman pulled right in front of me almost hitting me and jumped out of her car and ran into the store, when I met up with her in the store and mentioned to her what she had done, she said "I am in a hurry and it looks like you made it ok"; as I stood there in my walker; it was just a "bless her heart" moment. When I go shopping and out doing errands, I always allow enough time to handle any situations which may take longer, like finding a good place to park. Then I always have a book or a journal to occupy my extra time, if I have any, and of course there is always people watching.

TAKING A BATH/SHOWER: This can be rather intimidating, however, it is manageable, if you would feel more comfortable the first couple times and you live alone; have someone there when you take your bath/shower. I am going to cover the bath first as that is the method I use, as I cannot stand in the shower. I fill the tub with water and I like my tub full and I also suggest this as it will create a buoyancy for you, I sit on the edge of the tub and lift one leg in and then the other one; I also have a rubber mat on the bottom of the tub securely suctioned to the tub; then my soap dish has a bar and I use that and the side of the tub to lower myself in; now be sure your hands and side of the tub are dry, if it is not dry then use a wet (dry is to slippery) wash cloth when you do this, then wash as usual, I always have everything I want/need around the tub so I do not have do without and/or try and reach it, have to get out again etc; then getting out, get out while the tub still has water in it, I do not pull the plug until I am ready to get out; put your bath towel on the side of the tub (I use a very large towel) and then I get up on my knees and but my bottom close to the edge of the tub and lift up with one hand on the tub (on the towel) and one hand on the soap dish bar, once your bottom is on the edge of the tub lift one leg at a time over the tub, now if your legs are weak and/or your hands/arms; take a wet wash cloth and place it on your leg first and then lift, turn around and you have made it. Congratulations!!!! SHOWERING, is a little different and I am not that great of an expert on this, but just use the tips I have given you here for the bath and apply them to the shower.

SHOPPING: I always shop in the malls and stores that have the electric carts, it makes shopping a pure pleasure and it is fun. If your favorite stores do not have the carts, get yourself a scooter and there is your freedom.

GARDENING - Once again this can be done, just differently, use a stool and find the stool/chair that works for you for your specific condition; get raised flower/vegetable beds; gather all of what you need to do the job in a bag (my family/friends call me the bag lady) and then you will only need to get up and down once. I sit on the ground because then I scoot and that works for me. I take care of my yard and I also have a fishpond and I clean the filter and maintain it, it can all be done, you just need to figure out a new way of doing things.

TAKING THE TRASH OUT - Ok, now this is a trick, and I still can not (dislike that word, but sometimes that is just the way it is) handle the big green recycle green waste bin but I have figured out the rest. The trashcan I have is smaller and on wheels and I roll it down the driveway a little at a time, and the recycling I put in paper bags with handles (as paper is recyclable) and then move that out bit by bit to my car and drive it out to the curb and unload it. I can not handle the plastic crates they give us for recycling; I put a large note on each bag "recycle" and so far they have always picked it up.

I know this is just the tip of the iceberg on daily challenges we face, but at least this will get your minds working in ways to perform everyday tasks easily the way you can do it.

What Furnishings Do I Need For My First Apartment?

A first apartment is an exciting time for any young adult. But knowing what furnishings you need can be a bit of a conundrum.

In the old days, most first time apartment dwellers were happy with second hand furnishings and shelving made out of cinder blocks and particle board. But today, there's many more choices, even for those on a small budget.

While it may be tempting to go dumpster diving or thrift store shopping, you can work a lot of magic with your limited budget by planning exactly what you need and what you can add later. By not trying to do it all at once, you can invest more money in key items you want to last a long time, such as a bed.

If you haven't purchased any furniture yet, make sure you can take measurements of your first apartment before you go shopping or deciding what to take from home. You don't want to spend an hour wrestling a king sized mattress up four flights of stairs, only to find that it won't go up the last flight in your apartment because the opening is too small.

To help you figure out what you need, let's go room by room.

Living Room

A really good option for seating in a first apartment is a futon or sofa bed. Not only does it offer a nice seating area, but you can use it when friends want to spend the night. Try to stay away from the old fashioned hide-a-beds. Their not comfortable to sit on, they're even worse to sleep on, and you'll get really tired of lugging them around from one apartment to another as you trade up.

Add a couple of end tables and a coffee table and you're well on your way to furnishing the living room. If you need additional seating, floor pillows can work or you can get an ottoman, if you want versatility. Of course, most people want an entertainment center, so get one that can grow with the size of TV you plan to get down the road. And don't forget storage areas, which can be in the entertainment center or you can use a bookcase with shelves and doored areas.

Dining Room/Kitchen

In a first apartment you may not need a dining room table, unless you want to use it to do homework or have a poker night with friends. Chances are a couple bar stools at a breakfast nook will do just fine. If you really want a dining table, go with a bistro table or kitchenette that can be reused down the road in your next apartment or house.

Bedroom

This is an important room to furnish since you spend one-third of your life there. Invest in a good bed because you'll probably have it at least 8 to 10 years, perhaps even longer. Try to get a queen or even a king, if possible, since you'll hold onto it longer than a full size. A dresser is a good option, too, since many apartments are short on closet space. Round it all out with a nightstand or two for an alarm clock and you're good to go. Alternately, a cedar chest can double as a night stand and give you additional storage space.

Home Office

In this day and age a lot of people spend as much time on their computer as they do in bed. It's wise to get the best chair and desk you can afford. A bookcase can come in handy, too for storing supplies and software.

Patio/Deck

If you have an outdoor space, you'll want to create an escape that is comfortable and relaxing. A bistro table will work nicely on a patio or deck, along with a barbecue. Alternately, you can get a couple of chairs and a small outdoor occasional table. It largely depends on the size of your space.

Decorations

This is a personal choice, of course. But personalizing your space can really make it feel more like home and you'll look forward to coming home to your first apartment if it feels comfortable and welcoming. Lamps are perhaps the biggest consideration, since apartments tend to offer a single fixture on the ceiling and nothing else. Choose lamps that will work well in your next couple of places. Don't go with something that's too trendy.
