Two Foot Stretches For Plantar Fasciitis - Plus an Idea to Help Get Rid of the Pain

Foot stretches for plantar fasciitis can help to ease the pain of this lousy foot condition. Plantar fasciitis is a common problem people suffer with their feet. It's a form of tendonitis affecting the plantar fascia which stretches along the bottom of the foot.

With plantar fasciitis, the pain is usually felt very sharply in the heel area, but can also be a generalized pain in the foot. Usually it feels like you are stepping on a sharp stone or a piece of broken glass.

I limped along with it in my right heel for close to a year before I finally got rid of it. Foot stretches were part of what I did to treat my plantar fasciitis, but I also had to learn other information to successfully end my heel pain.

The pain is terrible in the morning when you get out of bed, and take your first steps. When your foot begins to warm up as you walk, the pain will diminish. If you sit for an extended period of time during the day, then you will probably have pain as you get up and start walking again. In the evening, the pain can be significant too when you begin walking after resting or sitting.

Plantar fasciitis does not go away on its own. It will continue on indefinitely until you learn what to do to alleviate the pain, and then take action to heal your foot. Foot stretches for plantar fasciitis can help to stop the pain and get your foot to heal. They are worth doing, but there are other things you should learn about to treat the tendonitis condition in your foot.

Here are two foot stretches for plantar fasciitis. All you need to perform these two stretches are a common bath towel and some stairs, plus the determination to do them.

If you have severe pain or discomfort while making these stretches, then stop and don't continue with them. Listen to your body and don't go beyond what it says you can do.

The towel stretch.

1. Roll up a towel length-wise.

2. Sit on the floor with your legs stretched out in front of you.

3. Hold on to the ends of the towel, with an end in each hand, and put the towel under the ball of the foot that has plantar fasciitis.

4. While keeping the knee straight, slowly and gently pull the towel toward you. You should feel the stretching in the bottom of your foot, the back of your calf, and perhaps in the back of your thigh.

5. Hold this stretching position for 10 to 30 seconds. Repeat the towel stretch 2 to 4 times a session.

Stretching the plantar fascia and calf muscles.

1. Stand on the stair nearest the floor. Place your feet so that the part of your feet that contact the stair, are from just in front of the balls of your feet forward through the toes. The middle of your feet and the heels should be over the edge of the stair, and not contacting the stair. Keep your balance! Hold onto the banister or railing, don't lose your feet grip on the stair.

2. Now, slowly and gently lower your heels down and relax your calf muscles. If done correctly, you should feel stretching along the bottom of your foot (the plantar fascia) and along the back of your lower legs up to the knees.

3. The stretch should be held for 15 to 30 seconds.

4. Use your calf muscles to raise your heels back up to the level of the step.

5. This stretching sequence should be repeated 2 to 4 times a session.

While these foot stretches can help to alleviate the pain and discomfort you are experiencing from plantar fasciitis, there is no certainty that they alone will solve your foot problem. Usually people need to do more than just stretching.

My idea to help you treat your plantar fasciitis, is for you to learn all you can about this foot condition. There are many things going on in your foot to bring about plantar fasciitis and its pain. You must know the "why" and know the "how" in order to heal your foot. The more you learn and know, and the more you know about the options and techniques available to treat it, the better your chances are of getting over this lousy foot pain for good.
